What should I prepare before the consultation?
Prepare three things: a note of how the matter developed in date order, the documents you received from authorities such as a court, the police or a school, and the text messages or contracts exchanged with the other party. If you do not have the originals, photos or screenshots are enough for a consultation. Even if not all documents are ready, do not put off the consultation if you have received a notice with a date on it. In many procedures, the options available shrink once a deadline passes.
What do I bring for each field?

An administrative appeal against a school violence measure must be filed within 90 days of the date you learned of the disposition (Administrative Appeals Act, Article 27). The right to claim division of property after a divorce expires once 2 years have passed from the date of the divorce (Civil Act, Article 839-2). Because some procedures have fixed deadlines like these, write the date from the last column of the table on the first line of your note.
How do I write a timeline note?
- Write the date, place, people and what happened, one line each, in date order
- Separate what you saw and heard yourself from what you assume
- Do not leave out facts you think are unfavorable. A lawyer may not disclose secrets learned in the course of duty (Attorney-at-Law Act, Article 26)
- Mark the items that have supporting material
- Write the result you want in one or two lines
One page is enough. Rather than telling a long story in sentences, listing dates and facts like a table lets the lawyer grasp the issues and deadlines quickly, and you can ask more questions in the same consultation time. Bring the original documents, but keep copies or photos separately.
What to confirm at the consultation
- Whether the person consulting with you is a lawyer, and that person's name
- What specialization that lawyer has registered with the Korean Bar Association (KBA)
- The order of steps in your case and when the nearest deadline falls
- Whether you can get the scope of the engagement and the fee terms in a written contract
- Who will report progress to you, and how
You can look up registered specializations by the lawyer's name in the lawyer search on the KBA website. How to search is set out in the specialization registration system.
Warning signs to avoid
Article 23(2) of the Attorney-at-Law Act prohibits advertising that creates unjustified expectations about the results of the work. You can apply the same standard at the consultation itself.
- Promising an outcome without even looking at the documents
- Recommending a contract after only staff consult with you and no lawyer appears
- Pressing you to sign and pay on the spot without time to think
- Not giving you the scope of the engagement and the fee terms in writing
If cost is a concern, you can use the Korea Legal Aid Corporation. It gives telephone consultations at 132 (no area code) and also offers in-person and online consultations. It can tell you whether you qualify for legal aid.
